About This Tour
Rising from the plain of Thessaly like stone giants reaching for the sky, the monasteries of Meteora are one of Greece's most breathtaking sights. Perched atop towering sandstone pillars formed over millions of years, six working Byzantine monasteries still cling to the clifftops — a feat of faith and architecture that defies belief. Your day begins with a private pickup from your Athens hotel, as your dedicated driver guides you northwest through the Greek countryside. The landscape shifts gradually from Attica's olive groves to the vast Thessalian plain, building anticipation for the moment the rock pillars of Meteora first appear on the horizon. Upon arrival, you will visit the most celebrated monasteries — including the Grand Meteoron and Varlaam — exploring their frescoed chapels, gilded iconostases, and the silent courtyards where monks have lived in prayer for over six centuries. Your driver will share the history and legends that bring these extraordinary places to life. Meteora rewards those who arrive prepared. Modest dress is required inside all monasteries — shoulders and knees must be covered. Wraps are available at the entrance, but bringing your own is more comfortable. Flat, closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended, as the paths between monasteries involve uneven stone steps. The best light for photography falls in the early morning and late afternoon, when the sandstone pillars glow amber against the sky. If your schedule allows, ask your driver about timing the visit to catch the late sun on the rock faces. The round trip from Athens is approximately 8–9 hours including stops. Lunch is at your own pace — the town of Kalambaka at the base of the rocks has excellent traditional tavernas where your driver can recommend the local favourites.
