About This Tour

Delphi and Meteora tour from Athens over two days in a private Mercedes with your own chauffeur. Our recommended order is the Meteora monasteries on the first day, so you catch the sunset over the rocks and sleep in Kalambaka, then Delphi and Arachova on the second; the order can be reversed if you prefer, with entrance to the Delphi site and museum and to two monasteries included, along with all fuel, tolls and parking. From €1,440 for the whole vehicle, booked online with instant confirmation. Two of the most extraordinary places in Greece sit two hundred and forty kilometres apart. Most visitors are told to pick one. Delphi was the centre of the ancient world. For a thousand years kings, generals and ordinary people travelled here to ask the Oracle a single question, and the answer could change the course of a war or a marriage. The Greeks called this place the navel of the earth. Standing on the slope of Mount Parnassos, looking down through the olive groves towards the Gulf of Corinth, it is not hard to understand why. Meteora came a thousand years later, and it makes no more sense today than it did then. Monks climbed sandstone pillars four hundred metres high, hauled themselves up in rope nets, and built monasteries on summits where nothing should be able to stand. Six of them are still active. The frescoes inside are six centuries old and the silence is older than that. Booked as two separate day trips from Athens, seeing both means roughly one thousand and sixty kilometres of driving and two very long days, each one bookended by four hours in a car. Done properly, as a loop with one night in Kalambaka, it becomes seven hundred and seventy kilometres and two unhurried days. That is the whole idea behind this tour. DAY ONE: NORTH TO THE ROCKS We leave Athens at half past seven and drive north through Thessaly, stopping once for coffee. You reach Kalambaka before noon, which matters more than it sounds. The monasteries close in the early afternoon, so arriving early means you see them without rushing. You visit the Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest of the six, and then a second monastery chosen on the day according to which are open, usually Varlaam, Roussanou or St. Stephen. Lunch is in a taverna in Kalambaka where the menu is in Greek and the lamb is local. By mid afternoon you check into your hotel with time to rest, shower and do nothing at all. Then, about an hour before the sun goes down, we drive back up. THE SUNSET, THE PART DAY TRIPS NEVER SEE By this hour every coach from Athens is already halfway home. The road that loops between the monasteries has a handful of viewpoints, and in the last hour of light the sandstone turns from grey to gold to deep orange. The monasteries become silhouettes against the sky. Almost everyone has gone. It is the finest hour at Meteora and it is the reason to stay the night rather than race back to the city. Afterwards, dinner in Kalambaka or in the smaller village of Kastraki, and an early night. DAY TWO: SOUTH TO THE ORACLE We leave at half past eight and drive south through the Thessalian plain, reaching Delphi late morning. You walk the Sacred Way up past the Treasury of the Athenians to the Temple of Apollo, then the theatre and the stadium above it, and finish in the museum with the Charioteer, one of the finest bronzes to survive from the ancient world. Lunch is in Arachova, twelve kilometres up the mountain, a village of stone houses and steep cobbled lanes that turns into a ski town in winter. There is time to walk it properly before we turn for home. You are back at your Athens hotel by half past six. WHAT IS INCLUDED AND WHAT IS NOT The price covers two full days of a private Mercedes and a professional chauffeur who stays with you throughout, all fuel, tolls and parking, your entrance ticket to the Delphi archaeological site and museum, and entrance to two Meteora monasteries. The hotel in Kalambaka is offered separately as a double room with breakfast in a good local hotel, added when you book. Meals are at your own expense, and that is deliberate. You should eat where you want to eat, not where a tour operator has an arrangement. There is no group bus, no fixed departure time to fit around, and no waiting on a pavement for thirty strangers.
