A growing number of ships, however, use Rafina on the eastern coast, which is farther out (around 40 kilometres and closer to the airport than to the centre). The distance matters: from Rafina you lose more of your day to the road, which makes a private, direct pickup at the port even more valuable. Whichever port your itinerary lists, the clock starts the moment you step off the gangway.
Five Hours: The Essential Athens With about five hours ashore you can comfortably see the heart of the city. The Acropolis and the Parthenon come first — the one sight no visitor should miss, best reached early before the midday sun and the crowds.
